We are pleased to share that General Cartoon (1963), directed by Tha Du, had its first-ever screening in Singapore as part of the Painting With Light film festival at the National Gallery Singapore. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to rediscover and reintroduce restored films from Myanmar’s cinematic history. The version shown was reconstructed from 11 surviving 35mm reels — with digitisation and restoration supported by the Thai Film Archive — and supplemented with additional material from U-matic tapes digitised by the Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive. This screening represents the most comprehensive version currently available to the public.

An introduction was delivered by Okkar, grandson of director Tha Du and co-founder of Save Myanmar Film, who reflected on the film’s legacy and the challenges of film preservation in Myanmar. The screening took place on Sunday, 7 September 2025, at 8:00 PM, at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium, located in the National Gallery Singapore.
