In collaboration with the Film Archive Organization (Thailand), Save Myanmar Film successfully carried out a digitization project in 2024. General Cartoon (1963) was directed by Academy Award-winning director Thardu and the intellectual property rights go to Thardu Film. The Save Myanmar Film team collected some original film reels in 2017, but they did not contain the complete story. A year later, the team discovered a U-matic tape of the film. Then, Save Myanmar Film seek permission from Thardu Films to digitize the film in 2018. The digital scanning and remastering of the film reels were generously supported by the Film Archive Organization (Thailand), while the digitization of the U-matic tape was kindly supported by Indiana University. This marks the second digitization project accomplished by the Save Myanmar Film team. Being able to preserve old films from original reels through digitization is deeply meaningful to Save Myanmar Film, an organization dedicated to safeguarding Myanmar’s audiovisual heritage. The first local screening of General Cartoon was held at the British Council in September 2024. Save Myanmar Film team is trying to screen this film at international film festivals and other film programmes.
